Five Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

A couple of years ago a co-worker forwarded a recipe to me for a chocolate cake that you microwave in a coffee mug. A few days later I tested my newly acquired recipe and it was a complete failure. I followed the directions to the letter but the cake exploded out of my tiny mug all over the inside of the microwave and the what was remaining of the cake was tasteless, rubbery and nearly inedible.

Since my initial tests of this cake I have revisited this recipe many times and in each tweaking it has been molded into the perfect little homemade snack. It’s just the right size to satisfy a sweet tooth. I use a Fiestaware 18 oz. Jumbo Mug for my cake. If you only have smaller coffee mugs on hand you can mix the batter in a bowl and divide it among two mugs so you can share – if you feel like it.

Five Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

  • 4 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • dash of salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
  • splash of vanilla
  1. Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a large coffee or soup mug. Add egg and mix thoroughly.
  2. Add milk and oil and stir until well combined.
  3. Add vanilla and chocolate chips (optional).
  4. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. It’s normal for cake to rise over top of mug – don’t be alarmed!
  5. Allow to cool and enjoy!

Notes: I highly recommend that you add the chocolate chips to your batter. The chips settle to the bottom of the mug and since the cake doesn’t have any icing it’s like having a frosting on the bottom of the cake. Yummy!
